It’s been one heck of a year for Minecraft. Not only has it seen continued success on the PC where it began, but it’s seen astronomical success on the Xbox 360 as well. The Xbox Live arcade game which released in May topped three million downloads in July, beat out every single retail game on the most played list in October, and then continued to break four million downloads. Now, 4J Studios and Microsoft have announced that the title surpassed the five million mark on New Year’s Eve. It’s a huge mark for an arcade title, especially for one that hasn’t even been out for a year.

The question is, how much further can it go, and in what direction? We’ll only know soon enough as the guys and gals at 4J have just recently gotten back from the Holiday break and are now hard at work on the next update.
