In PlayStation Plus We Trust: November 12, 2013

Sony’s PlayStation Plus is a subscription-based service that allows members to get weekly and monthly access to discounted games on the PlayStation Network, as well as the occasional free game. Sony has calculated that the $50/year service has granted thousands of dollars in savings.

Everyone loves free games, but nobody likes a free game that’s a piece of HDD-hogging garbage. “In PlayStation Plus We Trust” is a weekly feature outlining the new free addition(s) to the Instant Game Collection to help you decide whether that newest freebie in the Store is worth your time.

This week, mind-bending platformer Ibb & Obb is free.

Ibb & Obb

Now here’s an odd one. By turns beautifully colorful and strikingly minimalist, this is a co-op platformer with an interesting twist: passing through special portals will reverse gravity on the underside of the environment. In essence, you are traversing the same place, but a mirror image of it immediately below. This also reverses the controls, so pressing down becomes jump. While the two…blobs…will die when they come into contact with an enemy, they can defeat the enemy by going to the opposite dimension the enemy occupies and jumping on its shadow. It’s an interesting mechanic that makes for plenty of mind-bending puzzle opportunities, and lots of great co-op moments. The game is at its best during co-op, and grabbing a friend for some teamwork action is far more satisfying than the mildly clunky twin-stick single player. While there is not a great deal more than that mechanic alone, Ibb & Obb remains a mind-bending, charming, and challenging indie platformer.

Verdict: Worth Downloading

Compared to past weeks, this list is stupidly large. Not all of them are winners, but there are quite a few worth looking into. Beyond Good & Evil HD is a mere $2.50 and it’s well past time you check it out if you haven’t yet. Cloudberry Kingdom is supposed to be quite good, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Game is a retro delight. Let us know what you’re getting below, and we’ll see you Friday!
