We know very little about what Rockstar is planning for Grand Theft Auto V’s multplayer, but the highly acclaimed developer plans on it being just as significant as GTA III’s open-world gameplay.
IGN recently spoke to Series Producer Leslie Benzies about anything and everything GTA V, and while the campaign’s ambition was discussed at length, the game’s multiplayer is also an area where the team is looking to innovate.
“That’s what we’re working on, but we’re not ready to talk about it just yet,” Benzies said. “Refining open world multiplayer into something really special has been a huge focus of development and we are very excited to share more information with people soon.”
That’s all fine and dandy, but just how much of a focus is really on the competitive gameplay? For Benzies, the hope is that the multiplayer does just as much for gaming as the open world in GTA III.
“The ability to switch between different characters allows the player to do things that wouldn’t have been possible in any other GTA game, and on the multiplayer side we hope that GTA V will do for multiplayer open world games what GTA III did for open world single-player games,” Benzies said.
Whether or not this will be accomplished is yet to be seen, and honestly, we really won’t know how much of an impact GTA V will have until after its spring 2013 launch.
