You may have recently noticed that Sony has begun to offer downloadable retail games on their launch date – most recently this was the case with Borderlands 2. However, the publisher has announced the new PSN Day 1 Digital program where big-name games will be hitting PSN on the same day they hit retail stores. So far, Sony has confirmed that PSN users can expect to see Resident Evil 6, NBA 2K13, Dishonored, Doom 3: BFG Edition, 007 Legends, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, and Assassin’s Creed 3, all available sometime on the release date.
This action is sure to peeve retail stores as this is currently one of the only areas where they still have an upper hand on the digital download scene. Making matters worse (for them), is the fact that, not only will Playstation Plus users be able to take advantage of these offers, but they will save an extra 10% on the upcoming NBA 2K13, Dishonored, Doom 3, and Need for Speed Most Wanted by doing so.
The new question is, how will Sony’s competitors react? Microsoft will surely feel pressured into being more timely with its releases and there’s no guessing how severe the reaction from physical retailers will be. Only time will tell. For now, PSN users can rejoice over yet another feature which continues to improve the quality of their experience.
What are your thoughts on this new feature? Do you plan on taking advantage of it? Discuss.
