Batman: Arkham Asylum/City
It’s not easy to redefine the action/comic book genre, but Rocksteady’s Batman titles came as close as one could. These games took the Dark Knight, threw him into a confined space, and forced him to fight his way out. A deep pool of upgrades and gadgets to play around with rounded out an intense Metroidvania-style exploration system, and an extremely solid counter-based combat system made beating down baddies something to look forward to. The stealth system, involving sticking to the shadows and taking down enemies one by one as their friends got steadily more panicked, was one of the most satisfying experiences of any game this generation. From the writing to overall quality, this was the definitive comic book game experience of the generation.
