It’s always difficult to judge what publishers expect from a title, especially when dealing with larger AAA games. During the months before release, both God of War: Ascension and Gears of War: Judgement were discussed in relation to possible franchise fatigue. What was expected for these juggernauts is still unknown, but we now have opening month sales estimates. Unfortunately, the pre-launch talk might have had some truth to it.
According to an investor note from Cowen and Company, estimated sales of the two fall far below what their predecessors have done in the past. Judgement is said to sit around 425,000 units sold in its opening month, compared to Gears of War 3 which broke 2 million. Ascension shared a similar fate, selling about 360,000 units to God of War 3’s 1.1 million.
On a more positive note, Tomb Raider kept rolling forward with an estimated 696,000 units sold, while BioShock Infinite raked in the cash with an absurd 665,000 units in ten days.
