The gaming community is a fickle bunch. We don’t like change, and boy do we like petitions. The latest fan created petition to pick up steam revolves around the upcoming Thief reboot and Stephen Russell, the original voice of protagonist Garrett.
Now sitting just over 2,000 signatures, the petition opens strongly with the following passage,
We were promised that we will play as Garrett. The voice we’ve been given is not him. Stephen Russell, the voice actor for the first three Thief games, defined Garrett. Garrett does not have a defining face, it is his characteristic voice that makes him who he is. Change that, and he becomes another character entirely.
Developer Eidos Montreal has commented before on the decision to exclude Russell, instead choosing one Romano Orzari of Assassin’s Creed fame. The need for full body mo-cap pushed Eidos towards Orzari, an actor experienced with the practice.
Whether or not this petition will affect the game is anyone’s guess, but petitions on the internet don’t exactly have a good track record. But, who knows, the number of signatures is still rising. Thief is currently scheduled to hit the PC and PS4 sometime in 2014.
