7. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
The Monster Hunter series is one of the biggest franchises in the Japanese gaming culture. Though there have been a few Western releases, the series has yet to really hit its stride on this side of the world, but that may perhaps change come next year. With simultaneous releases of the game coming to both the 3DS and Wii U, hunting monsters together with friends could be one of the next pastimes people will remember fondly. The series is all about budding up with like-minded hunters to venture out into wide environments slaying the biggest and baddest monsters the world has to offer. One of the new big features about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is that it will work cross-platform between the Wii U and 3DS versions, both in savegames and local multiplayer functionality. The difference is that the Wii U version will boast an online multiplayer component, so friends take their adventures to the internet together. If you’ve never experienced a Monster Hunter game before, then this will be the perfect time to jump in and find out why our friends in Japan are going nuts over the series.
6. Bayonetta 2
Nothing much is known about Bayonetta 2 yet (including whether or not it’s even coming out in 2013), but if it’s enough for Nintendo to come in to Platinum Games and save it from being cancelled fund it under their own publishing label, then who can really complain? The original release of Bayonetta in 2010 was one of the most talked about games of that year, featuring an over-the-top narrative and a completely off the walls intense, sexy and strong female lead character. Being a force that can smite both angels and demons wearing nothing but a skin-tight outfit made out of her hair (I know, right?) has never been more ridiculous yet fun. And with Nintendo looking to entice hardcore gamers back to their brand this is one of the better moves they could have made. Before jumping back into Purgatory just remember one thing: don’t f*ck with a witch.
5. LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER
Upon first glance, people would say this is like a LEGO version of GTA. Though there may be some parallels (cops & robbers, a sprawling city, humourous tone) this title plays more like a LEGO game we’ve become accustomed to over the years rather than a 3rd person action-shooter. Following the perspective of officer Chase McCain (reminiscent, perhaps, of popular action characters such as Die Hard’s John McClane), players will protect and serve Lego City by upholding justice in probably more… radical ways than real-life justice systems would.
