Another day, another confirmation that a AAA game will have a multiplayer mode of some sort. This time, Lara Croft will be joined by a legion of others online in the upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot. Confirmation comes from the game’s official Tumblr page, with details coming in the January issue of OXM. The post hints at a co-op campaign, with a reference to ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’s’ co-op functionality.
While I have no idea the extent of the multiplayer offerings here, I do have to say that I’m sick of AAA publishers tacking on some sort of online functionality because it can. In the minds of those in charge, this justifies the online pass, while also playing it safe and offering features that every game on the market has already. Remember when ‘Skyrim” came out and no one cared that it was a singleplayer game? Or ‘Portal’? Or ‘Bioshock’? Or ‘Mass Effect’? I remember the days when big publishers took risks and made singleplayer-only games. But I guess those days are coming to an end from the AAA space.
Are you guys as sick of tacked on multiplayer as I am, or am I whining about nothing? Let me know in the comments.
