Sony first revealed Beyond: Two Souls at this year’s E3 press conference, and it definitely made an impression. Said to focus on the concept of what happens to us after death, the story will follow the life of Jodie Holms as she tries to discover the truth about Aiden, her ghost-like companion.
Developed by Quantic Dream, known for Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, Beyond promises to be an emotionally driven roller coaster. But even with this track record, can it assuage critics who say their previous titles are just complicated quick time events? Some new footage from Gamescom may shed some light on this.
The video gives us a good look at the controls of the invisible entity Aiden. Players will be tethered to Jodie, creating a barrier so it can’t stray too far, but there’s complete freedom in the given area. Interacting with the environment seems to boil down to breaking everything in sight, at least in the section shown, but enemies provide a bit more fun. Possessing a person gives you Heavy Rain style prompts to control the unfortunate aggressor, or you can simply choke them to death. Overall, it looks like Quantic Dream is sticking with what they know and building on it. We can’t wait to see more when it releases next year.
