Look in my eyes, what do you see? The Cult of Personality.
CM Punk has taken the WWE by storm over the past year, from the now-infamous “pipebomb” in which Punk dissected his issues with the company while sitting Indian-style to becoming the WWE Champion (twice.) However, CM Punk has done more than simply win a leather strap with an uncomfortably out-of-touch design. Throughout his campaign, he has proved time and time again to be a workhorse performer, consistently turning undercard matches into instant classics and connecting with a fan base in dire need of a Superstar to relate to.
THQ has surely seen the effect of CM Punk on the psyche of the WWE Universe, and they approve enough to officially announce him as the cover athlete for WWE ’13. Not only that, but we have an official release date to look forward to on October 30th.
The announcement was made on the May 28th episode of Monday Night Raw live from the self-proclaimed “Best in the World” himself. Below is what we will be seeing on our local store shelves in a few (potentially long) months:
Look at the image in the upper right hand corner, you’ll notice it is a reformatted (due to the company name change) version of the old Attitude-era logo. As a fan of that time period in wrestling, I’m intrigued by the possibilities (other than what we already know) and I’m hoping it’s more than just an attempt to cash in on a popular name. With E3 just around the corner, I’m willing to bet the flood of WWE ’13 information is just getting started.
