After a stable of rumors that the next Rainbow Six title was being developed to take place in New York City and deal with “a home grown terrorist threat,” Ubisoft has now confirmed today that most of those rumors are, in fact, true.
The company made it official that ‘Rainbow 6 Patriots’ was the name of the of the title being developed by Ubisoft Montreal with support from Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm. The plot follows Team Rainbow as they have to eliminate a threat from a home-grown terrorist group called the True Patriots. According to the Ubisoft announcement:
In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Team Rainbow faces a new and very real threat called the “True Patriots,” a highly-trained, well-organized revolutionary group that claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests. The True Patriots will do whatever it takes to reclaim their country. Playing as Rainbow, players will face critical scenarios that will require them to make tough ethical decisions in order to stop this new breed of terrorists.
“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6,” states Ubisoft creative director David Sears “In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction. This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience.”
This is the first Rainbow Six game to be released since Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 back in 2008. No specific date for the title has been released, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in 2013 for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.
For a further look, Game Informer has announced that a full cover story will preview the game in the coming weeks and they’ve released a six and a half minute long prototype development video. As of right now, it’s listed as “not actual gameplay footage,” but it’s a clear indicator of some of the powerful and incredibly weighting moral dilemmas the team at Ubi Montreal is attempting integrate into the game.
