Year Walk
Set in a snow-filled Nordic village in the late 1800s, Year Walk might just be the most unique game on this list. Released solely for iOS devices, the game is not only one of the scariest games I’ve played this year, it also experiments with the adventure game genre. One might think a game on the iPhone can’t provide any real scares, but intuitive controls and absolutely phenomenal atmosphere create a winter world which feels surprisingly open and lonesome. While on the “Year Walk,” the protagonist encounters a variety of bizarre mythological creatures, some of whom might not be all that friendly. The best parts of Year Walk can be spoiled quite easily, so the only thing left for me to say is download the companion app. It’s much more important than you think.
