Modders claim to have cracked the Wii U

The Wii U hasn’t exactly had a good year. Console sales are falling well below expectations, and highly anticipated games are seeing¬†delay after delay. To add to this list of bad news, apparently the Wii U has been cracked.

The folks over at the modding site WiiKey claim they’ve reached this milestone, explaining the following in a brief blurb on their front page.

Yes, its real – we have now completely reversed the WiiU drive authentification, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation K3y. Stay tuned for updates!

This same group of modders were responsible for the original WiiKey, a mod chip which granted unprecedented freedom on the Nintendo Wii. Region restrictions were no longer relevant, DVD backups were possible; it pretty much did everything you’d expect. It’s currently unknown how similar future products will be to their Wii predecessors, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
