Michael Pachter chooses the Xbox to win the next generation

351344804_1358758730

Industry analyst and all-around controversy starter, Michael Pachter, has had plenty to say at this year’s SXSW, but his biggest claim may be that the next Xbox will win the coming console generation.

Plenty of industry leaders are currently discussing all things entertainment at the 2013 South by Southwest event, which is an annual music, film and interactive conference in Austin. Pachter of Wedbush Securities has been talking up a storm, and an image has just made its way online that reveals one of his boldest claims.

Although Pachter sees a bright future for both Microsoft and Sony, it’s the Xbox that will reign supreme with its strong social features and TV tuner. Gaikai will help propel Sony to new heights, but it just won’t be enough to put the PlayStation back on the top of the mountain.

Pachter is an industry veteran that should never be ignored, but if you don’t agree with him, let us know who you think will take the top spot in the next generation. We haven’t seen the “Xbox 720″ quite yet, but will Microsoft be the top dog?

When not writing about all the latest and greatest happenings in the video game industry, you can find Josiah on PSN, XBLA or Steam (Lionheart377). He has a soft spot for classic, turn-based RPGs, but also spends a great deal of time jumping from platform to platform and shooting dudes in the head.

No it wont come with TV tuner. doesn’t it sound funny anyone?

I know when I think of the next generation of home consoles, I immediately imagine them including antiquated media delivery methods.

‘the tv tuner and SKYPE are killer apps’ LOL

Lol is right. I know when I think of the next generation of home consoles, I obviously imagine it including antiquated media delivery methods. /s

    I dont agree with him

  • Jacob

Agreed. Sony=lies, overhype and underdeliver. Crappy streaming will be the end of playstation and that craptastic psn.

    • Axe99

Sounds like you’ve got some baggage their Jacob – Playstation has been the best console for a broad range of gaming three generations in a row. Sony don’t deliver on everything they set out to do, but they do alright. And all three make promises they don’t keep ;) .

      • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

My problem with Sony is that they do over hype things to the extent they actually make use of it.

They were all hot sauce about the six axis and the 3D tv game stuff. A teeny tiny sliver of the games used it. Same goes with the Move. Sony thinks up these gimmicks and gadgets and never follow through on it.

The kinect is garbage but you cant blame Microsoft for not sticking with it.

        • Axe99

All three console platform holders over-hype things. I can’t believe you’re having a go at Sony and giving MS a free pass – do you not remember E3 (and that pre-E3 meeting with all the white robes, lol) in 2011 and 2012? And MS has placed far more emphasis on Kinect than Sony did on 3D or Move (which is still actually pretty well supported – it’s a niche peripheral, but Sports Champions and its sequel are the best examples of their ‘sports movement’ style games currently in existence). Sony are releasing God of War, Last of Us and Beyond this year (and a few others) – all core games, and none with a focus on 3D and Move. All three look better visually than anything I’ve seen on 360 on a standard TV. As for 3D, a lot of games got 3DTV support – I can’t say how many or how good it is, though, as 3D isn’t my thing – but unlike MS and Kinect, I still get my games that work well without 3D. So exactly how much are gamers suffering for this?

Forza 4, on the other hand, requires you need a Kinect for one of the achievements! (I have a 360, but I do not, and will not, ever have a Kinect, as I game in a small study that’s far too small to support it – Move still works though, although only for things like puzzlers, light gun games and under siege/RUSE – there’s not enough room for Sports Champions or the fitness stuff). And then there’s the lack of first-party games developed by MS beyond Halo 4 and Gears: Judgement, which is because MS is _sticking_ with Kinect, not ditching it. It’s a core part of their strategy, and I’d bet good money you’ll see this when we here about their next Xbox as well. Thank the heavens they kept Kinect out of Halo 4, but when it comes to their development and publishing strategy, Kinect has far more profile than Move and 3D do over in SCE’s worldwide studios.

Thing is, Sony tries a lot of new stuff, some sticks (don’t forget Kinect-style gaming started with the Eyetoy), other things don’t (I’m not sure how well Wonderbook will go, but I’m not really its demographic anyways) – but, at the end of the day, for three generations, their focus has always been on core gaming. MS is using gaming to get into the living room, and so changes focus on a regular basis as its not about gamers, but more about strategic corporate plays (the 360 still has some great games, and is a top system – it’s just it suffers a little because its underlying focus isn’t about gamers, its about the living room) – and, on the by, MS makes just as many bold statements about its gimmicks as Sony does – remember all the non-Smartglass stuff at E3 2012? Bet that didn’t take long ;) . Ninty, on the other hand, makes great systems and games, but is a little behind the times these days tech-wise and its hard not too call them out on gimmicks given the nature of the original Wii controller.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

Oh no you said ninty in the end. You realize i cant take you as seriously i was going to now right? Seriously? Ninty?

No i dont really remeber anything from E3 of any year. I mostly just watch the blooper stuff from konami styled failures and then read the news on sites.

I dont really care about visuals that much, i in fact find games that move toward more realistic visuals very off putting. And id never play a game written and directed by a chimp like David Cage, id rather watch a very bad movie while playing simon says. Seriously i have standards and id never lower myself to touching a product made by him.

Microsoft does not tell developers what kind of achievements to put in games, go blame Forza guy for it.

You know what im gonna wrap it up here becuse im not sure what you are going for. Im just saying that Sony keeps coming up with lots of gadgets and gimmicks, they are a tech company after all. But they seem to go from gimmick to gimmick so fast and just hope that someone will use them, and people very rarley do.

I will say that i… well i dont like Sony at all, they are a faceless corporation just out after my money like the others. But i did like the ps2, i took a pass on the ps3 becuse it was stupidly priced and im not made out of money. I will most likley pass on the ps4 as well because im getting old and id rather just play on my pc now, i want mods and the freedom to fuck about with my games.

          • Axe99

What issue do you have with Nintendo? Writing them off as a game publisher and developer, or the Wii U off as a platform, suggests you’re well and truly entrenched in the ADHD, “a month is a long time in gaming” generation.

As does you comment about Quantic Dream’s work. Sure, it may not be your cup of tea, but the world and interactive entertainment is a (clearly!) a fair bit broader than your own (by the sound of it narrow) experience in gaming. And the way you’re talking suggests that you haven’t achieved a greater level of evolution than the rest of us, so I’d hold off before calling people chimps ;) .

On the by, Forza is developed by Turn 10, part of Microsoft Game Studios – they _are_ part of Microsoft, so yes, Microsoft did decide to put a Kinect achievement in ;) .

Anyways, the point I was making in this thread was that all three console platform holders behave quite similarly with hype – so singling out one over another suggests biased parochialism. Same goes for your odd comment on faceless corporations – you realise that the Xbox and Windows 7 (or 8 if you’re insane) are made by a large corporation that is just as ‘faceless’ (despite the fact that all three platform holders have a number of clearly identified spokespeople – ie, they’re not actually faceless – or maybe you’ve never heard of Major Nelson, Jack Tretton, Andrew House, Shigeru Miyamoto and so on).

As for Sony’s ‘gimmicks’, I think you’re getting a little carried away – what, we’ve seen the Sixaxis, 3D, Move and Wonderbook this gen. Of those, Sixaxis had no negative impact on gaming, and worked well in a small number of games (Flower would have been impossible without it). 3D is niche, but there are people that get right into it. Move is similarly niche, but again has a decent rate of adoption and has some of the best-in-class motion games on it. Wonderbook may turn out to be a miss, too many bits and pieces to get it going, but it’s a little early to tell at this stage.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

I dont have any issue with Nintendo, they are not to my taste at all but what i have an issue with is ninty, that makes who ever says it sound like a complete fool. No man i am a very very very patient man, i wait years for games to lower in price and to have all the dlc collected on it. I only now got dead space 2.

I cant answer the Quantic Dream stuff without sounding like a prick so im just gonna be honest about it. His works disgusts me, a arrogant incompetant stuck up little shit sitting in a chair going “im… making the future of gamesh… adult… mature… gamesh…” But all he makes are poorly made games that feel like old tired movies. He is a pathetic excuse of a person that has failed in making movies so has attached to the gaming industry becuse they are the only ones desperate enough for any pretance of maturity and story to accept him. He is a sham, i am too evolved, my taste is too refined, too experiance to be taken in by his puerile amateurish trash.

Phew that was a bit of a rant^^

They put out executives out as the faces in a manipulative attempt to create cults of personalities. But they show nothing of themselves, we know nothing about them, they are just suits on stage. Faceless mannequins that moves and speaks on behalf of the share holders.

Yeah but thats what im saying, their gimmicks were only for a small number of games, thats what ive been meaning all the the time. They put out rarely used gimmicks while hyping the hell out of them.

          • Axe99

I agree that David Cage goes on a bit, and can be far too pretentious, but Heavy Rain is actually a really well put together game (I play a whole range of stuff, from strategy, shooters, racing, sports, RPGs, flight, action, brawlers, the odd fighting game and whatnot, and have for over 20 years, and I enjoyed it – it’s well paced, and well put together. It’s game mechanics aren’t ‘standard’, but they are absolutely game mechanics. Of course, it won’t appeal to fans of arcade shooters and sports games). It’s like I think Cliffy B carries on like a twit sometimes, but I still gave Gears a go and can appreciate it as a quality shooter :) . And Peter Molyneux really needs to promise less, and carry on a whole lot less, but the Fable series is all quality (even if it’s not quite what Peter says it will be ;) ).

As for Ninty, do you not like abbreviations, or that particular phonetic arrangement? It’s an odd thing to dislike – that abbreviation for Nintendo has been used for decades, and has a long history. I’d be interested as to where your emotional preconceptions relating to the term come from.

As for the hype, you could just ignore it and focus on what you enjoy? I find it odd so many people go ga-ga over Justin Bieber (very odd, in fact), but I happily enjoy it and listen to music with a dash more depth. Just because he’s with Island records doesn’t mean I’ll avoid listening to Queen (also on Island records). I think Kinect is an overhyped niche product as well, but I’m not going to avoid Halo because of it.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

I shy away from fighting games and sports game but i play every kind of game as well. But not only is David Cage a pompous child but he also puts out mediocre at best games. I have watched lets plays of it and if it was a movie (which it is) it would be the most akwardly acted and put together movie. Lets go with the begining, happy happy family oh we are the happiest akward mannequin people in the world.

Again, its a very very poorly put together movie, to borrow a phrase. There is no subtext, only text. Things are spellt out with giant red letters at all times, there is no graceful story telling, no finesse… no skill.

Well see i value words and the meaning they convey. And ninty makes me vision a fanboy sitting in his a basement scratching the eyes out of photos of women. Its just a stupid sounding word i cant belive anyone above 10 would use, its a baby word. What if i started calling microsoft Mixy, its a dumb word that makes people think less of you.

Well that depends on how to boil down hype. If hype is just them going “WOOOOH ITS GONNA BE GREAT” then yes i ignore it, i know they are lying. But if they tell me something will be supported and widely adopted id feel lied to if it wasent.

          • Axe99

How much of a playthrough of Heavy Rain did you watch? (And why on earth would you watch rather than play a game like that?) It definitely starts slow, but it builds and _every_ gamer I know who’s played it enjoyed it a lot. It may not be your cup of tea (and it sounds like you’ve got a few suitcases of emotional baggage relating to Cage, so there’s a fair chance this would get in the way of your enjoyment anyways), but if you haven’t played it, then you’re not really in a position to comment. Because of the nature of games, watching someone else play them is a materially different experience than actually playing them.

As for MS, I’ve heard plenty of people call it ‘The Big M’, and I have no issue with that. I’m not a Ninty fanboy at all – I play across systems, but the Wii’s the first console I’ve ever regretted owning (and the first I’ve ever traded back in), and I find the Legend of Zelda games boring. It’s just an abbreviation, a nickname. I may live in a more relaxed society than you, but over here, we use nicknames all the time and think nothing of it. Apologies for offending your cultural sensibilities, but unfortunately on the internet you’re likely to come across people with different cultural backgrounds.

As for Move and 3D, how well they’re adopted isn’t your concern. I have a Vita – its awesome. It’s not selling like hotcakes, but I don’t care as its not my main gaming system, and I’m having a great time on it as there are still plenty of games. Its a little sad so many people are missing out, but that’s a first-world problem if ever there was one, so I’m not going to lose sleep over it. Adoption is also outside of anyone’s control – the Wii, Kinect, Move could all have failed hard. They didn’t, and continue to be well supported (the Move is still well supported – I suspect strongly that you don’t even have a PS3, let alone a Move), as does 3D implementation (which is also well supported on the 360, given the two of ‘em like to compete pretty strongly. If I had a 3D TV, I’d be happy with my options. I don’t have a 3D, though, and don’t care.

As for feeling lied too, you get that from every advertiser, most politicians, and a lot of media outlets. Yes, Sony push it too hard and don’t always come through with what they’ll say they do (Move and 3D actually have been done well – Remote play, on the other hand, has generally been a failure this gen, after being talked up hard early), but so do MS (sorry – Microsoft) and Ninty (cough – sorry – Nintendo). I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched Fox News, but if you disliked being lied too, they’d have your rage meter filled in moments, as would listening to any politician for more than about a minute. It’s an unfortunate fact of life, and one that needs to be adjusted too. I’m excited about the PS4, but I don’t think for a second we’ll see the smooth implementation of everything mentioned in the reveal, because that’s not how these things work, for any platform holds.

On the by, lols at the basement example. Fortunately for me, I live in a society where people that use abbreviations and nicknames aren’t forced to live underneath houses!

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

I belive i got up to where the child had just been killed by a car and… i dunno i just couldant deal with anymore. Im not an ADD person that demand constant car chases, in fact i cant deal with most modern movies because quick cuts just ends up confusing me. And the game is a movie, pressing X to Jason does not a game make. And i have no emotions toward Cage as a person, i dont know the man and i only know his work. Which to my mind is pure trash, i do excuse if it seems that i am trying to force the opinion on you. It is how i see it and its my personal truth.

No MS and big M dosent upset (im not upset, just saying that the use of the word just makes it hard for me to take a person seriously) anyone becuse it dosent infantilize someone. Ninty conjures up images of Miyamoto and the gang sitting around in diapers dribbling.

Well if we go with a thing like the Vita you should be… well a bit concerned that its not performing well shouldant you. A producting doing poorly means that less games will come out to it after all.

Why do i have to own a product to have an opinion of it? I dont own stilts, i still thing they are silly. I cant throw money at what ever catches my fancy just to test it out. A prudent consumer hedges his bets and waits patiently. I am never an early adopter and limit myself to one console. I wait and see how things play out, i never see Sony make good on a promise. Nor does MS or Nintendo ofcourse.

I will be honest, i do react very poorly about being lied to, its a gut reaction i feel towards all forms of dishonesty. It gals me.

But i also get excited, i hear an announcement of certain things and go WOOOOOOH. But i dunno, the big publishers, game and console alike has just been systematically murdering my excitement for their products this entire generation. I like my 360 but i would honestly have rather bought better PC in retrospect.

I live somewhere where i am free to chose with is insulting and not, infantilize somone is seen as rude and self degrading. You can chose to not take others into perspective if you chose if you prefer.

          • Axe99

Yeah, the early bits are the slowest – that’s only the ‘set up’ part of the game, and it does improve considerably after that. No, you don’t need to own a product to have an opinion on it, but it’s sensible to have a strength of opinion that’s aligned with the level of experience. If I said “The Hobbit” was a horrible, horrible movie, after only watching the first 10 minutes, and carried on about it, there’s a risk I’ll get called out and look like I don’t know what I’m talking about (unfortunately, the Hobbit isn’t that great, and I’ve seen the whole thing). This is happening to you now because the strength of your opinion is disproportionate to your knowledge of the subject. Sure, if you read Xbox fanboy sites, you’ll get the impression that Move is poorly supported, but it’s not. Same for 3D. So calling them out as ‘lies’ just makes you look like you don’t know what you’re talking about. If you’d have complained about remote play, on the other hand, or the PS2 Hard Drive, you’d have been fine, but you ended up attacking products that provide quality entertainment, and continue to do so. It’d be like me going off about Xbox360 hardware failures in 2013, when the issue was (mostly) resolved years ago. I’d rightly look like I was out of touch.

And apologies if it sounded like I was ‘infantilising’ Nintendo – I picked the term up from Nintendo fans (indeed, from reading the Official Nintendo Magazine – not because I was a fanboy, but because a cousin was on the writing staff, so I subscribed to it for a while) – if the Official Nintendo Magazine calls Nintendo ‘Ninty’, I didn’t think they’d find it insulting – should I have written to them to double-check?

As for the Vita, it’s doing well enough to have a number of quality games out for it – because Sony support it well – that’s all I need. I’d be a bit disappointed if it was all I had, but it’s not, so I’m smiling :) .

As for PC – it’s great, but you get just as many lies from PC publishers – Skyrim at launch (interface optimised for PC, right…..), Half Life 2, Episide 3 (we’re still waiting), always-online DRM. I game more on console because I have more trouble with PC. That said, if you’re willing to deal with all the extra work, PC is easily the most flexible gaming platform.

Most importantly, make sure you have fun – I’m not talking about this with you to attack you, just because I’m a big fan of stuff being represented accurately, and it was fairly clear you weren’t full bottle on what you were talking about. Gaming should be about enjoyment – so focus on the system or types of games you enjoy, and accept that there are others that aren’t your cup of tea and leave them be. I personally found the Wii terrible, but I know plenty of people who enjoyed it – the last thing I want is for my dislike of it to hurt their enjoyment.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

Well a entertainment products duty is to capture your attention in the beginning. Movies do it, books do it and games do it. They are supposed to draw you in. Just because its a game i wont sit through a slog of meh to get to good parts. There are xbox fanboy sites? I honestly only read dtoid and this page so i wouldant know. Im not a fanboy of anything really. Well i admit blind fandom to deus ex and certain titles but never to a console itself.

I am not alone in thinking its a silly word, it just comes of as a silly little baby word. Its a gut reaction and i admit that.

The good Vita games i see and im not super invested in the area. But the reviews i see for Vita games are mostly for games that id rather play on a full screen. Like the uncharted game and the assassins creed games, id much rather just have a full scale version of the games.

I got a console for easier gaming. But now at the end of the generation i have soured on the experience, i keep looking at the games i could have gotten for pc instead now that i got a better pc and becoming annoyed. I wish i had the fallouts and skyrim so i could mod them… but i had a shit pc so i got them for console.

I am the same, thats why i kick off about hearing David Cage or Jon Blow being called brilliant artists. I also cringe when i hear people praise Kojima for his writing skills. When i see someone who is not just bad but terrible at their job being praised i cant help myself. I have to vocalize my opinion.

          • Axe99

No shame in blind fandom to Deus Ex – that’s a sign of good character ;) .

Not sure about all entertainment products needing to capture your attention in the beginning though. I like stuff that ‘builds’ (I’m a big fan of grand strategy games, and they almost always start slow – but you get slow building movies and books as well). It’d be a shame if all entertainment followed one path of ‘intensity’ – would make everything one-note. Doesn’t mean you should have to like that stuff, don’t get me wrong.

Not suggesting you’re not alone in not thinking it’s a silly word – it just isn’t everywhere, or I’d never have picked it up. I didn’t make it up, I ‘learned’ it from reading the ONM – so calling Nintendo by a nickname it’s endorsed seemed harmless enough – you’re the first person, ever, who I’ve bumped into that’s ever had an issue with it – there are also plenty of people out there who think it’s fine.

As for the Vita, the whole point is that it’s for when you’re away from a big screen – you’ll never get the same amount of power/dollar from a handheld system than you will from a console or PC, as the handheld is much smaller and has to run on a much lower wattage. That said, I have found that the Vita experience is scarily close (in fun factor) to hitting the PC/PS3/360 – I’ve found myself playing my latest ‘travel’ game on the couch, instead off firing the big boys, on more than a few occasions. But it’ll never be quite there.

As for Cage and Blow (and I didn’t get Braid either – went right over my head), they are what they are – gaming’s a much bigger medium and has room for a wide range of experiences. I loved Heavy Rain, but I found Braid arbitrary and pithy. I don’t think Blow is terrible though – lots of people clearly dug what he did – but it’s not my thing. Hell, I found Demon’s Souls to be a frustrating mess (not for its difficulty, but numerous other design decisions), but lots of people enjoyed it – it’s not a bad game, it’s just not my kind of game. Sounds like Heavy Rain is in the same spot for you – just not your thing – but don’t fall into the trap of thinking just because you don’t like it, that’s it’s necessary all-round bad – it just may be made with a different audience in mind.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

A product dosent have to capture me through a big flashy opening. My favorite book of all times is Dune. And that starts with a conversation that throws weird terms at you. And it takes many chapters for it to heat up. But it captures your attention by the incredibly atmosphere it creates. Heavy rain just makes me think im watching some sort of comercial for trendy pastel furniture. Things can start slow but it cant be a slog becuse that turns people off.

Ive never been that big about handheld games, i played my gameboy into oblivion and had a GBA during my school years. But these days… not just my thing anymore.

I dont think that something being a success makes it a good thing. Oprah is one of the most famous people on earth but she is a shallow vile hypocritical person. Kanye West is incredibly popular and he is at best a sound technician. In my head there has always been a cosmic scale of quality. I can see craftsmanship in things i dont like and can admire that. But when i see things that are pure mediocrity or in fact garbage it makes my skin crawl.

          • Axe99

On the other hand, the Lord of the Rings (the book), starts very slowly, but is one of the most popular books of all time. I’m not saying things should always start slowly either, of course, but that different patterns and rhythms can work well, but they won’t work well for everyone (ie, clearly Heavy Rain didn’t work for you).

Not sure what you were getting at with the success thing – agree success doesn’t mean it’s good on a technical level, but success usually means that it’s doing something for people. For an entertainment product, if its successful it’s highly likely to be providing entertainment in some form. I don’t like Oprah or Kanye, and don’t think much of their technical skills (or personalities ;) ), but I can appreciate that they have entertained a great many people. Now, those people that they entertained may have poor judgement, but it’s not for me to shape the world in my image – better to appreciate others for what they are.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

Yeah but that is like Dune, its super slow but it builds a world, it creates wonder that draws you in. Heavy rain just creeps you out with uncanny valley mannequin alien people.

Ahhhh no i cant agree with that. I think there has to be standards and things like heavy rain and Oprah falls beneath that. You cant just pander to the lowest common denominator and expect people that know better to be cool with it.

  • mike

Patcher, how can you say that, being Japanese. What, you’re american? Ah OK…

Just look at Nintendo: they thought’ let’s make a weak console, put HD on it, make some marios, all moms , dads and fans will run and grab one. Wrong. Its selling worse than ‘really bad’. No one believes in this console, gamers, fans, studios.even Nintendo.

The same will happen with the x720. The 30 million x360 users( with +50% failure rate, actually only 30-40 millions users are active and unique), 80% of these buyers will get the 720 because they are all those young kids that got the console from daddy, for playing forzas online. These guys will for sure buy the console where the next gears or halo game will be, and that will be the x720.

For all the others, when they will see that Microsoft, like nintendo relies on mario games, will only rely on halo, forzas, cod, gears and halo, with ads all over them, with hundreds of restrictions, with games a bit better than the current x360, and these guys will know that the ps4 will get incredible amazing games, hundreds of them, and will know realize that a gamer wants great AAA games, and the ps4 will be the console that will give it to them, well, like its happening to nintendo, the same will happen to Microsoft. Fans will buy one, but the others, that are tired of sending their consoles for fixing, every 4 months, with rrod, and are tired of paying, paying, paying, well, they will move to Sony, for sure. Pact her does know this, but the 50 flags tattooed on his ass just force him praising a national product and brand.

Next generation will be about amazing games with never seen before graphics and everything, and the ps4 will be the console to own.5 GB of ddr3 ( 3 for the os) vs 8gb of gddr5, the winner is Sony, and microsoft-pachter know it. The ps4 will be much more powerful, and well give the most, the most varied and the best looking games. Gamers don’t want to post a tweet or Facebook every time they kill and enemy or they fart. They want to play games, great games. Gamers buy a ps3, kids get an x360 from daddy, for yelling at their friendzzzz with the crozzz gamezzz chatzzzz while playing codzzzzzz.
The ps4 will be a console for gamers, and not only most of the ps3 owners will get a ps4 in the first 3 months, but also the ps4 will gather huge markets like japan, who have millions of old ps1-PS2 fans that skipped the ps3, and will get the ps4, because all the new features, games, online features, etc. They represent hundreds millions of potential buyers. With the ps4, Sony will retrieve his crown, with no doubt.
And all the hate in the world from all the haters, Microsoft’s, pachters, ign, gamespot, all the Nintendo blind fans and all the Xbox 10-15 yo gamers(80%), all that hate won’t be enough to stop the return of the king. No bad ports this time.only 1080p at 60fps AAA titles, killzone shadow fall is just 25% of the final quality, and you guy are already disgusted and ready to commit suicide.now imagine next Christmas. Its gonna be insane.
Don’t worry, you will still get many Mario and halo games on your consoles.don’t worry, you will still need to pay silver coins for a gold subscription for getting copper content, like playing online.you got so used to paying for everything, Microsoft won’t upset you, and will let you keep paying again and again.and since you are so nice, they will offer you free ads on your dashboard, or maybe in graphics.imagine how cool it will be, playing halo and seeing an ad for office365, as a texture.man, million want it, too!!!

If Sony does a global launch, 16 million units won’t be enough, for satisfying everybody, until 12/31.

    Am I an horrible fanboy?
I’ve had almost all the consoles, had a 3dFX on my computer, and my first HD console was a 360, that rrod 4 months later.
NO, I’m a gamer who spend a lot of money non games, and Sony simply was the only one who kept giving me great AAA exclusive games, many different genres, and is still giving, today, wonderful games like tomb raider, the last of us, god of war, behind two souls, and so on. And it will continue like that for many years.
If Sony lowers the price of the ps3, and with china recently allowing Sony to sell consoles, they could sell 50 million ps3 until the end of 2013. China is huge, just imagine a 120-150$ ps3 being sold there, with the huge game library, Sony could sell shitloads of ps3′s really fast.

Yeah, long post, but when I hear such BS from an analyst that people hear and follow and believe, I just can’t remain silent. If this patcher wants a national brand or company to succeed, OK. But if his arguments are totally stupid and wrong, full of nonsense, just to praise his flag and ego, someone from another country must say ‘stop your BS’.
    And I say
Stop your bullshit.really.because in 2-3 years, you will have to swallow it.

nintendo screwed up. everybody is holding off for the ps4 and next box.

if they would have waited until the sony and ms consoles were released, they would have cleaned up selling the wii u as a cheaper next gen alternative and ridden the next-gen hype to profits.

      • mike

I’m sad Nintendo screwed up , too.
I love gaming, and would like the Wii u to be a real beast, but Nintendo didn’t care about me, they only care about releasing Mario games, for young people.
I really hope the x720 will be a monster as well, so I can grab one, put it right next my ps3 and future ps4, and enjoy great games, discover halo world in HD, etc.I really hope Microsoft will think ‘games’ and start buying studios, and make great new games.I don’t want them to make a console and thinking on putting windows x and office y on it, and have Norton selling me an antivirus for my x720. I hope they will stop charging for online playing.they have billions $ they can spend and lose, they don’t need to charge people for playing online. I hope they concentrate on games, and not on gimmicks ,just to make people play for whatever.games. I want it to be solid as a rock, and not burn or rrod after 3 months.I’m disgusted my first HD console died after 4 months, I had pgr,a cod game, obvilion, etc, I could only play like 10% of those games, and bang, rrod. Then I moved to ps3, and had great games all these years. Not being fanboy, but I have like 4 ps3, from flat to slim, even gave 2 to my family , they all work flawlessly, even my fat still works.
When we pay like 600$ for a console, you expect it to last many years.but the rrod on the x360, wow, it really disgusted me. I remember paying 2×1 month of live subscription, to try some online gaming, even if it was only 15 minutes per week.I paid, and its frustrating when you don’t go online but you still pay for it.

I hope the x720 will be free to play online. But knowing Microsoft, if they can make 5cts x millions users, well, they will still do it. We don’t even imagine what ideas they could bring to the x720, for making more money, with ads inside games, etc.

Microsoft, please, think about games, games!
We all already have bluray players, smart phones, many devices for social, etc. Make a console mainly for games, and add other media features as a bonus for gamers.people want games.Sony will be back on stage, with a pure gaming machine.people buy consoles for playing games, games make the consoles fly out of the shelves. don’t screw it, I want to get a 720, too.
        Games!

no mike your definitely a fan-boy. no doubt about it.

  • LordVonPS3

Sony will release a device similar to the PS3′s Play TV for those who want this functionality. As for Skype, I don’t see it being a killer app what with voice & video chat also being available to the PS4. As for “Predictions”, it’s pointless until both machines are released to the public alongside the Wii U.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.fabiani.5 Robert Fabiani

that means ps4 will win lol hes never right about anything

    • http://igameresponsibly.com/ Dzelly

We’ll see, we don’t know anything about the next box yet. So how is he making that bold of a statement? I mean I know he’s gotta have some kind of inside track, but how does he know what the reaction to the unknown features will be?

  • some1example1

patcher says the next box will win, that’s great news for the ps4. because this guy can’t even compete against a broken clock.

skype and a tv tuner? are you kidding me. no one uses Skype and if you’re playing next box, that means you have a t.v., which to state the obvious, already has a tuner.

ps4 doesn’t stand a chance. all it has is better specs, focus on gaming and developers, a top notch cloud service, used game abilities, no b.s. drm always online crap and free online multiplayer.

listen to this guy, and have fun waiting for servers to play games on.

i think i just got patchered. his predictions are so ridiculous that he has to be trolling hard.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ethan.d.stroud Ethan Davis Stroud

Do you have some inside information on what the next get xbox is, because that statement sure looks like you do.

  • http://twitter.com/ephoenix6 ephoenix6

look, call me a biased fanboy, but Michael Patcher doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s a business analyst that happens to specialize in games, and speaks to reporters because they pay him, because they think he’s relevant; but he pulls predictions out of his ass. his ideas are no more accurate than probability; with no evidence to back them up besides theoretical possibility. ex “we might see an ice age next year, so I declare that we will!” gamers need to stop listening to this guy. He’s worse than uwe boll because people still pay attention to him. he also said we’d see gears of war on ps3. I’d love to look at his track record.

  • http://twitter.com/AmityVal Amityvillain

The only reasons Xbox may win is due to simply loyalty and the fact Sony may have shown their hand too early giving xbox enough time to revamp their hardware

  • http://www.facebook.com/mattias.sjostrand.7 Mattias Sjöstrand

So all he is saying that same old will be same old?

Well goodness stagnation is sure a tricky thing to guess at.

  • Josh.

All in all, it looks like us gamers are in for a great gen of gaming.

When everybody wins, the victor is subjective.

“We won’t lose any more publishers to bankruptcy.”

This is just another Pachter prediction that doesn’t take any variables into account. He makes all of his predictions under the assumption that the current trends at all of these publishers will stay completely consistent for the next 8 years, and that competition, business practices, and advancements in technology and game mechanics will have no effect on anything that happens with this companies.

“No publishers currently show signs of going bankrupt, so there’s no way it can happen in the next gen.”

Eight years is a lot of time for a company to make a lot of mistakes, Pachter. A lot of the publishers that went out of business this gen were doing just fine when the gen started. What if a publisher releases a series of really bad games? What if they have a really bad PR flub that screws their stock up? What if they pump tons of money into a product that doesn’t do well? What if new publishers come into the spotlight and go bankrupt before they make it? What if a contract expires and a publisher loses their biggest IP to another publisher?

Let’s put aside the fact that assuming that all publishers will survive the next gen with no problems is just fundamentally ridiculous for a sec. It is STILL ridiculous to think that in an industry that changes so rapidly and regularly, that all publishers will keep up with no issues. It’s not that his predictions are wrong that bothers me, it’s that his predictions are just plain stupid.
