EA on Wii U: Not a next-gen console

original

During EA’s Jan. 30 investors call, the major publisher stated that Nintendo’s recently released Wii U is not quite a next-generation console.

While Nintendo has been marketing the dual-screen technology as the next big step for gaming, EA doesn’t believe that we’ve seen generation four quite yet.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier was first to comment on the company’s statement.

The call also included the news of Insomniac’s Fuse being pushed to the first quarter of 2014, the Medal of Honor franchise being put to rest for a while, as well as news on EA’s earnings.

What do you think about EA’s opinion on the Wii U? Is it a next-gen console? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below!

Ha! you guys actually wrote this article? EA hates Nintendo because they wanted Wii U to run solely under the Origin, and have full control of it’s online marketplace! I don’t know why anyone listens to them or Michael Patcher when it comes to discussing Nintendo. They are both very biased views and won’t be fair to even write about. With THAT said EA ain’t exactly striking gold with Origin’s shotty connection and obviously missing features!

Unfortunately, Pchter’s track record is kinda good :p Wii-U is ALOT closer in performance compared to PS3 and 360 than the rumored specs of their next offerings. Also, without even hearing Pachter speak, I personally never considered Wii-U as next gen either. Wii was a “gimmick” too. A successful one. The touch screen controller…remains to be seen but it certainly isn’t a system seller like the Wii. This is already obvious.

I will say this again, if power matters that much. Why are the ps3 and Vita both failing? It’s clear that relying on third party console spanning games is what’s killing it but no one want’s to talk about that.
So what if the Wii-U isn’t that strong at least with Nintendo we are going to get interesting and Innovative games. At least Nintendo knows how to draw in consumers with unique EXCLUSIVE titles.

The PS3 isn’t failing where did you get that information? But the Vita yes its a dud. The only true innovative games you may hope from Nintendo no one else is going to use that touch-screen as much.

        • SirCrush

Haha God of War, Twisted Metal, Little Big Planet, Infamous…I rest my case :p

Agreed. And there was already rumor that Sony will produce a new dual shock, possibly with an LCD screen in it. Call it what you want. Next gen, current gen, we will see just how many people shell out 4 or 500 dollars for Sonys next system , or even Xbox for that matter.

Don’t really care haven’t been a tendo fan since Tyson punchout, but as for the delay to fuse that sucks..

Why is there even a debate about this? I mean ask yourself who you gonna believe – A choir of devs working on U titles that have stated ‘clearly to all but the most idioticly stubborn’, as far back as last July, that the system is very powerful overall compared to previous consoles. Or you going to believe EA?
Origin, despite that it definately needs improvement, would be a major coup for Nintendo and I’m personally very supprised they didn’t go down that road.
Though one has to wonder ‘why?’ which is something we might never know, considering most game site reporting on the U consistantly fail to ask the pertinent questions.
The Wii U despite barely having been launched has been a system stigmatised and typecast by its timely (some would say overdue) release.

Two years ago, console hardware manufacturers and developement unanimously agreed as to what a next generation console would be.
It would be a system that didn’t focus on raw power, but had ample and sufficient support for a variety of gaming genres and software deployment. Upwardly mobile and configurable and ultimately able to last the entire generation.

The Wii U is this, there is no debate about this. Is everyone prepared to keep this up because the Orbis and Xbox (project Durango) will most -definately without a doubt- bring to bear a similar system integration based on thier own technologies.
Why? because its the current absolute limit of mobility that a console can offer heading into thier next generation.
Everything you have learnt from the last six years you can throw out the window and start absorbing what has been the substructure of industry talk now for TWO YEARS TO DATE (going into E3 2013). Two years and you’re all still arguing yesterdays news against todays facts.
No wonder todays gaming industry is so much less transparent than it used to be, this fucking idiocy destroys all standards!

I don’t understand. EA knows 2GB RAM is a larger amount of RAM than 512MB? That 32MB eDRAM is more than 10MB? Is it the leap they wanted? No, but considering they are likely to milk their Frostbite engine for another 5 years and it works fine on the Wii U I don’t see how where they would have a problem with it having a little bit less power.

EA isn’t dissing Wii U at all. You guys are the perfect example why fanbloggers like you guys should just quit your sad attempt at trying to be a “journalist.” It’s like you guys didn’t even realize that next gen is the 8th not the 4th. Here is the FULL quote:

    |”Never count Nintendo out. They have great IPs. You will see a bounce
when they bring these out. We see no correlation between Wii U sales and
what we expect from other next-gen consoles, can’t talk a lot about
that though. What we describe as “Gen 4″ is yet to come. We’re excited
    and investing in it.”|

Notice how they say OTHER next gen consoles? They wouldn’t say that if they thought the Wii U isn’t next gen. “Gen 4″ most like means that we haven’t seen a TRUE next gen game yet is all.

I hope you don’t get paid to post poor blog posts Josiah.

I am an old timer and just thought the same thing 4th gen wtf??? I guess they consider it the 4th gen of “modern” consoles doing 3D etc….I guess the first Playstation,Xboxand N64 are first gen in that logic….

    lol *waits for ps4*

  • Curt John

I don’t doubt it for a moment. I own it, and it’s clearly fractionally better (if at all) than the PS3/360. The PS4/720 whatever are going to be miles and miles ahead of it. Nintendo are in their own little generation bubble, only just catching up now with technology 7 years old. This is not even remotely next-gen.

Also, it’s kind of pompous to say this next gen is the ‘fourth’ gen. That implies gaming began with the PS1/N64/Dreamcast. What about the gen before that – Genesis and SNES? Or before that – NES and Master System? Etc? We’re entering at least sixth gen, not fourth.

  • Kamille

very true. Wii U came 7 years too late and Wii was competing with the PS2 which was faced out just a couple of months ago.

why all the hate! Nintendo is an innovator, history shows that! If not, let’s start with controllers(d-pad), 4+ controllers for multi-play, the gameboy(mobile gaming), and the gamepad and many more just to name a few. Can anybody tell me who’s sold more consoles than Nintendo? I didn’t think so! Why do we play video games? It’s seems like everyone wants Nintendo to fail, why? Nintendo is leading innovation and quite frankly quality hardware/software. Who’s sold more franchises than Nintendo(Super mario bros) and there commitment to non violence(blood) gaming has been unprecedented. I’ve owned Play stations and never quite got the enjoyment out of playing that system(s) as I did with Nintendo. When it comes to specs, what are people looking for, 4k resolution(graphics), who here has a 4k t.v. nobody and you won’t see the likes of those for quite the while. Who here’s willing to spend thousands of dollars on 4k t.v. for console gaming? I’ve heard all the rumor, but Nintendo is steadfast with quality and innovation. We need Nintendo! Point blank, where would gaming be without Nintendo? Challenge software companies to push the limits of this new console and stop porting other systems games. We all should embrace Nintendo’s courage for not compromising there history of legitimate title and hardware. As for those who think their company is going to fail, because their stock is down 25%, what company hasn’t had their ups and down, hell Apple was just at $700/share 4 months and is currently at $450! Are they failing, I beg to differ. One additional note Nintendo Wii U, has been out all of 10 weeks and has sold 3.06 million units, not to shabby! The Wii U is a solid console with great potential, and my family and I are enjoying all aspects of this console.

      Ok…

The D-Pad? Atari has those before Nintendo.

The Analog Stick? Atari 5200 has those in 1982

4 Controllers? Atari 5200 has those too in 1982

Camera visor? PlayStation had one before… In 2003.

Using Discs for games? Commodore Amiga CD32 was the first to have one, in 1993, then Sony in 1994.

Using Cartridges for games? Magnavox whas the first (NOT ATARI) to use them, in 1972.

GameBoy? Did you EVER hear anything about Milton Bradley’s Microvision (1979)? It was the FIRST HANDHELD console with interchangeable cartridges.

Nintendo HAS NEVER BEEN an innovator. Just like ALL THE OTHERS, THEY COPY.
