Remember that hour and a half patch you have to download when you get your Wii U to access the e-Shop and Miiverse? Any new buyers will be seeing this little patch for a while. But if you wait until 2013, you might be in the clear from downloading it and having it pre-installed.
Speaking with Gamasutra, Reggie Fils-Aime said the patch was to make sure the online system was as functional as possible. He also stated:
“Nintendo developers want to make sure that the very best product is available to consumers. That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible. That’s why the system update was required on Day One – and this is quite similar to what’s happened with other consumer electronic products.”
At least sometime in 2013, we won’t have to worry about having to download a near 1GB update. If you want to hear more about the experiences of having a Wii U, check out Angelo’s first weekend with the system.
