If you think Assassin’s Creed will forever corner the market on video game free-running, think again. You may recall Mirror’s Edge, the 2009 first-person platformer published and developed by EA. According to Ben Cousins, the former executive producer of Battlefield, the game is now getting a sequel.
In a tweet responding to a story on Eurogamer, cousins had this to say:
“It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror’s Edge 2 is in production at DICE.”
Cousins left EA last year and is now general manager of mobile-game publisher ngmoco-Sweden. It should be noted that EA is, at present, not commenting on the existence of Mirror’s Edge 2.
The original Eurogamer story reported that EA’s DICE division, located in Stockholm, does not want “to become a Battlefield machine.”
The original Mirror’s Edge did fairly well critically, receiving a final Metacritic score of 79/100. If a sequel can improve upon the critical complaints, the game could attract a much larger audience than its predecessor, especially if it’s a next-gen launch title. Those possibilities, though, remain to be confirmed.
If you’ll keep your eyes on us, we’ll keep our ears to the grindstone for EA’s next statement regarding the game.
