Rumor: Only one next-generation console to be released in 2013

The current console cycle may be winding down for both Microsoft and Sony, but according to powerhouse publisher Activision, we’ll only be seeing one new piece of hardware launch in 2013.

The company’s latest earnings report showed almost $850 million in net revenue, which is a pretty impressive number for any publisher out there. There’s plenty for the group to be excited about, but CEO Bobby Kotick expects a decline next year.

“As we look to calendar 2013, we remain cautious in light of a challenging worldwide macroeconomic environment,” Kotick said.

Diablo III’s massive success on the PC is one of the largest factors in this successful time for Activision, but while it’s interesting looking at the past, it’s even more exciting to look toward the company’s future.

“We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful,” Kotick said.

Strange that he only mentions one new console, huh? Rumors have been floating around the web that Sony will be introducing the Orbis right before E3 begins next year, so it is possible that the next Xbox could be coming out sometime in 2014. But honestly, we won’t truly know until either console manufacturer spills the beans.

    It’s another nail in sonys coffin if they release the ps4 in 2014. It could be the end for them.

    Please remember that it’s been official ‘announced’ that Bungies next game(Destiny) is for Xbox720 releasing in 2013! This info was release in the recent court case with Activision and the old Infinity Ward guys. It’s a FACT.

    So there is no doubt, if there’s only ONE console released in 2013… it will be the Xbox720. I think people should be very clear on this… the Xbox720 IS releasing next year.

    I think sony are DEAD if they let Microsoft get yet another 6-12 month lead on them.

    But it looks like this is going to happen now… ps4 in 2014 is big trouble for sony.

      Can you post a link or source? I haven’t heard of this yet.

      Very interesting anyway. I find it hard to believe either company would release their next console the same year that they launch(err, debut) it. Especially since it will most likely be at e3… and then release only 6 months later.

      The last time I know such an event occurred was the Far more radical release of the Saturn on its debut at e3…

          Yes, they are at least timed exclusives for a year for the next Xbox.

          Sony are pretty much F-ed anyway, even if they show a glimpse of the PS4 next year. Their credit rating is “JUNK” and their stock is crashing fast. Any Sony product (except the PS3 as that has enough support) bought right now is simply money thrown away. No PS4 release is the end for Sony next year, no way of spinning that!

            credit rating has nothing to do since its coming from Moody a biased US agency. X360 is the least sold console after this quarter and PC gaming died ages ago. Windows is finished thanks to Android and PS4 will be the final nail in the coffin of the suck box. No one cares about GALO . GALO 4 has 87 at meta. COD killed GALO franchise

            PC gaming is dead? The article stated that Diablo 3 was one of the largest factors in the company’s success. PC gaming is missing out on a lot, but some may argue it is consoles that hold it back. If the next generation of graphics (for consoles) are realized next year then wouldn’t PC gamers benefit almost immediately?

      Don’t forget that the 720 was originally slated for a holiday 2012 release, so it’s difficult to trust any dates right now. None of the information about “Destiny” is set in stone.

        I’m sorry mate, but where is the info about Xbox720 being released in 2012?! I’ve only ever seen rumour and fanboy speculation about this.

        The ONLY cast iron facts about the Xbox720 release date/window is from the Jason West and Vince Zampella vs Activision court case. Documents from this case, signed contracts between Bungie and Activision, were made public(you know, real info, internal documents not fanboy rumour and wishful thinking). It’s a fact that Bungie are shipping ‘Destiny’ before Xmas 2013 as an exclusive for Xbox720(and there’s no possible way they are slipping on that release date). Latter games in the series are cross-platform.

        So, when you look at the available facts, your above comment makes no sense whatsoever… you can SET IN STONE the release windows of ‘Destiny’ AND the Xbox720…. it’s late 2013… there’s no quesiton about that.

      Windows is finished. PC gaming is dead and now MS to go…Even if SONY releases their console in 2012. all they need is next GOW, UC and KZ. As for MS …GALO franchise is finished. 87 at meta…also after this quarter PS3 would have outsold the junk box 360 ww….for MS ..console war is over
