PSN suddenly down and experiencing issues, no scheduled maintenance

Hide your kids, hide your wife – the PlayStation Network is currently down. There was no scheduled maintenance today, and Sony is yet to comment on the issue.

A number of users (including two members of our staff) have been unable to either sign-in, while others have said that they’re experiencing incredibly slow speeds that limit functions like adding friends, opening PSN store and much more.

Sony hasn’t yet issued a statement on the problem, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more about this sudden outage. If you happen to be experiencing these problems, too, please let us know below.

UPDATE: I’m now able to sign-in, but things are running very slowly. Friends, both online and offline, are not visible, and the store isn’t loading well.

    I am too!! It’s taking 5 minutes to load my friends, I can barely connect, and it did the same for my friend! I thought it was my router, but thanks for posting!

    It found a system update when I tried that option…It appears to be downloading the update just fine. (I missed the version number) It’s taking forever to install. Hoping it doesn’t take me down completely…

    v 4.31 update may have solved my connectivity issue. Things don’t seem lightning fast, but I seemed to connect this time, where I wasn’t able to do so previously.

    Since i updated 4.31 fw when it first released i noticed it went slower , its probably the Firmwares fault or the server.

    i got a update at about 8.30 uk time before that psn was running slow but after update came load my friends list of stats and looks like i have lost some friends from my list…i waited about 10 mins to see if they loaded up but they did not

    I just wiped some dust off of mine and now it’s fine…..EVERYONE TRY CLEANING YOUR PS3….especially around the power button….since the power button turns it on…. :-)

    I hate to be that one guy who brings this idea into everyones head; but, does anyone else get the feeling that this may be another repeat of the Network Hack and Crash of 2011? Similar issues arised then, didn’t it? And this latest update happens right after a group of people jailbreak the system again- with massive world wide network issues arising (and lasting at least an hour or so with not excuse of maintenance) as a result of Sony’s attempt to stamp them out it seems. Am I the only one drawing parallels?
    I just don’t think this is an innocent issue like someone tripping over the chord, or someone spilling coffee on the server. But that just may be me.

    Slow as hell & invites don’t work. And yet you can get online in Max Payne 3 alone with no probs. Max Payne 3 works & the others don’t! Hilarious reversal of the usual situation.

      max payne 3 better get fixed as pass holders still cant download the new hostage maps, i called sony and they said we have people on it right now to fix the problem dont know if this is related to network down or not.

    I cannot sign in at all. It says it keeps timing out. I have friends who can sign in just fine, so I have no idea why this is not working for me. Everything is fine with my network….What gives Sony???

    A cut fiber optic line belonging to a commercial phone company has disrupted websites serving the Eastern Region. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problems everyone is having just thought id post it.

    This is strange a psn issue without warning every game is laggy as hell and it takes a light year to load my friends list also if im signed to psn the ps3 will take ages sending messages or exiting the xmb menu

    The last system update was very buggy to say the least. Do not jump to conclusions, this is not another attack, you can log in, though it is difficult, and many functions do not work at all.

    However Sony has said this recently:
    “PSN Performance Issues 11/1/12
    [PlayStation®Network]

    You may be
    experiencing performance issues with various features on the
    PlayStation(R)Network. We are aware of these issues and working on a
    solution. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

    Same with mine in the uk. couldnt get on blk ops the other night but ssf4 was ok. now it wont log on at all. internet test fails on psn. great… its either dantes inferno which i always play too long or i watch this film i bought for some unknown reason earlier called ‘the cooler’ which looks crap. it was only £2 though so worth the risk….

    hey guys don’t freak out… the hurricane that is hitting the east coast of america is whipping out power everywhere and servers. not just psn. but microsoft and banks and several others. if any of you understood how networking works you would know whats happening. give it a couple days. no worries!

    amazing, right i chose the ps3 320 slimover the xbox 250 s , big mistake on my part, psn always has connection issues, and now its suddenly down, again…. im thnkn hack, idk it jus feels lk wer gettn hacked… again. i gotta hand it 2 xbox, wer they lose in system reliability they make up for it in online services

    I’m new to the Sony PlayStation Network, and for the first time today I suddenly find myself trying to get into this network and unable to get in. Of course I am on the PS2 and been through the wringer with my ISP thinking I had problems with my router/modem, but I didn’t… Also, are PS2 games supported? I heard only a handful being active on the network, but I am not certain If anyone would let me know, that would be appreciated. Thanks.
