A few weeks ago, a rumor had surfaced that Square Enix was preparing to give Final Fantasy Versus XIII an official release date at the Tokyo Game Show. Today, it appears that all of that positivity surrounding the game has turned into it being cancelled.
Kotaku is reporting that Square Enix just recently made the decision to cancel the title. Rather than a public acknowledgment of the game’s cancellation, it was stated that the game will be allowed to fade away. The reasoning behind this tragedy is to apparently not impact the stock prices of Square Enix due to the public outcry.
Another source tells Kotaku that, a few months back, Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s development and resources had actually been folded into another game, which is to be the next numeric Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy XV. Whether this meant actual game assets and code or simply the movement of staff was unclear. This information was independently corroborated by yet another source, though it’s important to note both had learned of the “folding” prior to the more recent news of its outright cancellation.
It’s sad to see any title get cancelled, but the Final Fantasy community will sure be saddened by this news. The title has been in development for such a long time, it’s a shame to see that the development cycle has come to this.
