When you’re looking for a headset for your system, there’s a variety of factors that you’ll typically take into account. A headset that’s comfortable, accessible, has great audio and is durable top most lists.
We were recently given the opportunity to review the Tritton Primer Wireless Stereo Headset from Mad Catz. Most gamers are attracted to the headset due to the mention of it being wireless and the affordable price. While those are definitely two great reasons to look at picking up the headset, it offers quite a bit more than that.
Once the headset is out of the box, it’s a rather easy setup. You’ll have a few chords to connect from your Xbox 360 to your base station. Connecting these chords allow your system to recognize the headset so that the audio can be transmitted. If you’re running HDMI, you’ll have a separate audio adapter that still allows you to run the headset with ease. The base station uses a 5.8GHz signal which keeps you out of the interference range for most household phones or appliances.
There’s a sync button located on the back of the base station and a corresponding button on the left side of your headset. If you’re just using the headset for your in-game audio, you’re simply set to go. If you’re using the headset for both in-game audio and chatting with players in the game or in your Xbox Live party, you’ll need to plug a cable into the bottom of your headset that runs to your controller. While some may argue that it’s a “cable” on a wireless headset, it doesn’t take away from the experience the headset offers.
In our recent weeks with the headset, we’ve taken it through the gauntlet. We played over twenty different games with the headset on ranging from the Dead Space series to UFC Undisputed 3. While the headset does not offer surround sound, the audio quality is rather impressive. You don’t have the ability to tune various channels like you will on the more expensive headsets, but you’ll still gain an advantage in a shooter wearing this headset.
While some may worry that a $99 headset doesn’t offer comfort, you can put away those worries. While we wouldn’t recommend playing with the headset for over 5 hours (or any headset at this rate), you won’t be bothered by the headset’s design.
The headset itself is fairly padded, especially around the ear section. Each ear cup is ergonomically designed to ensure comfort and a snug fit. The mic will come from the left side of your headset and allows you to move it to your most desired position when playing. If you’re just listening to the in-game audio and not chatting, you can push the headset up until it’s flash with the headset’s design. The Primer headset has options on the bottom of the ear cup that also let you increase or decrease your in-game audio, chat audio, or mute the mic completely.
While you’ll get more features with a more expensive headset, you won’t find a better wireless headset for your money. Mad Catz put together a great unit that’s great for the casual gamer or the individual who just wants to not bother everyone else with their gaming. If you’re looking to get into competitive gaming, we’d recommend going with more advanced option from Tritton or a similar company. The Tritton Primer headset is a fantastic starter headset for anyone interested in gaming or just looking to upgrade to a more serious audio source. Don’t worry about comparing prices, you won’t find a better deal in this price range.
